The first $2,000 scholarship jointly awarded
by NurseWeek
magazine and chooseNursing.com
was awarded to Ms. Tiffany Baker, who will be starting her second
year in nursing school at Santa Monica College. The scholarship
was created to support the Coalition For Nursing Careers in California's
(CNCC's) commitment to achieve an adequate and diverse nursing workforce
for the state of California.
The CNCC was established in 1999 to address
the nursing shortage in California, where the nurse-to-patient ratio
is among the lowest in the country. The coalition, comprised of
representatives from health care organizations and educators, is
committed to attracting a pool of candidates for schools of nursing
that reflect the diversity and demographics of California. According
to Linda Gregory, Manager of the CNCC, "One of the many contributing
factors to attrition is the inability to finance a nursing education.
These scholarships help to defray costs and represent a move in
the right direction."
Ms. Baker plans to use her scholarship to realize
her ambition of becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. "My
dream is to contribute to the betterment of childrens' lives through
various outreach efforts. I am determined to not only achieve my
goals and succeed, but to also make my parents proud by becoming
the first and only college graduate in my family."
This scholarship is the first of five that
will be awarded to deserving students in California. To learn more
