Leadership Conference |
The 16th Annual California Health
Occupations Students of America (HOSA) State Leadership Conference
was held over a five day period in March 2003. CNCC was present
to promote its chooseNursing.com web site. The
HOSA conference is an opportunity to bring together young
people who are studying and training for occupations in health
care. Not only does the conference provide a forum for the
students to develop leadership skills and test their talents
and abilities, it also serves as a supportive environment.
Members from across California compete in events to test their
proficiency in such areas as medical terminology, parliamentary
procedure, and extemporaneous speaking. The competitions are
exciting for the members. HOSA member Denisse Campos, explains.
“The conference is a good experience, plus we learn
a lot. Basically, we get to show off what we know.”
Another HOSA member, Jessica Henricks, adds, “Our school
has a lot of minority students, so it just goes to show that
skin tone or gender doesn’t really matter when it comes
to how much you know.”
The event also presents workshops covering
a wide range of subjects including Anatomy in Clay, and How
to Land a Job and Keep It. The conference is also the venue
for the election of new state officers. Although there is
stress associated with the competitions and elections, there
is also lots of fun with dinners, dancing and a closing awards
ceremony.
Linda D. Gregory, Manager of CNCC had
this to say about the conference theme, the magic of health
care; “the magic in heath care is an intangible but
to “make a difference” is measurable and real.’
